If you go for a trip to France and beyond, the following information should be useful to make your trip easy and comfortable.
Instead of going by the usual Dover- Calais route, you may cross the English Channel with
Dover ferries operating between the port of Dover in the UK and Dunkerque in France. You can also travel with your car by booking a
channel ferry on this route and enjoy driving to the other parts of the continent. But to make a safe and hassle free driving on the roads of this part of continent, make sure that you follow the simple rules as stated below:
a) Keep left while approaching roundabouts. Drive carefully on the roads leaving enough space in front of your car, the way you do in the UK too and also allow sufficient space for the drivers to pass from behind. Keep a watch on the speed limits while entering a city or going out of it.
b) As soon as you leave the port premises, you will have to keep the compulsory documents ready to be produced for reference when required. This is not to harass any tourist but essential for security reasons. These documents include a valid original driving license with supporting paper evidence and passport that may be needed for inspection by the security agencies.
c) You must also take care that your vehicle is correctly equipped in the following way:
If your vehicle is UK registered and displays Euro-plates, GB sticker is not compulsory. Your vehicle should carry a warning triangle, essential for sending signals to other vehicles. The driver needs to wear a reflexive jacket or waistcoat during his travel and if somebody wants to drive on the right hand side, must be equipped with headlamp adjustments. It is also recommended to keep certain kits while driving through the continent like a kit with spare bulbs, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher.
d) Always fasten your seat belts on travel whether you are sitting on the front or in the rear seats. If your child is under the age of 10, he or she must travel in the rear seats and if you have a baby less than 9 months, can travel in the front seat but only in the rear-facing seat.
Following the above mentioned guidelines would make your trip safe and convenient on the foreign soil.
