Ferry travel to Greece is a wonderful experience in itself. Greece is the ancient land of civilization and is aptly called the cradle of Western civilization. It was home to many thinkers and was the birthplace of philosophy, systems of governance, literature, political science, drama etc. Ferry travel to Greece is available from different countries. Athens being the capital of the country and an ancient city, is very important to be on our itinerary for all the variety and history that it can offer. The city of Athens reminds of the ancient Greek civilization at its zenith.
We can go on a ferry trip not only to Greece but also to other Greek islands. The most famous islands of Greece are Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete, Hydra, Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia. A ferry trip to any of these islands is a wonderful experience. It is not only filled with remembrances of the ancient Greek civilization, but also all that the modern life can offer with Greece being one of the developed countries.
There are many
ferry companies that run to different parts of Greece and the Greek islands. Their travel reaches out to the farthest island and there are special travel schedules seasonally, particularly during the summer season, to serve the big inflow of tourists to Greece.
The largest port in Greece is Piraeus, nearby Athens, where ferries leave to Cyclades, Crete, Dodecanese and Eastern Aegean islands. Another port by name Rafina, which is close to Athens, runs ferries to the Cyclades islands. The port of Thessaloniki has its own importance. Vessels from Italy run through Ionian islands and arrive in Patras making Patras a significant port. To serve smaller islands there are also many other smaller ports found all over Greece.
But we have found from our experience that every Greek ferry company has its own rules and regulations as far as ticket issue is concerned, and also regarding boarding and getting off the ferries. Most companies however, make efforts to abide by the international standards in navigation, with their ferries being modern and fast, while being socially and environmentally cautious and their policies designed to serve the same at the same time providing the best of service to the passengers. Some of the companies that run ferries to and from Greece and Greek islands are Blue star ferries, Hellenic seaways, Minoan lines, Nel lines,Kallisti ferries, Sea jet ferries and others.
